Darkhorses & Non-Starters Week 13

Dark Horse or Non-Starter?

For many owners out there this is it: win or go home and wait until 2010 to play another game. I know I have a couple games like that this week, and I know many of you are scrambling to find that wild card player who could carry you to a surprising victory and fantasy post-season glory. There are more than a few players you should consider giving a chance this week, and just as many you should avoid. Here are my thoughts on a few of those situations.
Good luck everyone! I hope it works out and you come back to read this article again next week.

Quarterbacks

Dark Horses

Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers – I love Smith this week. The 49ers, despite their protestations contrary to the fact, are using a spread offense similar to the system he ran in college. The result has been two solid weeks from Smith for fantasy owners. The Seattle Seahawks surrender the 9th most points to quarterbacks, and have surrendered the 2nd most over the past six weeks. This could be a career day for Smith.

Antonio Pierce LB NYG – Pierce has been placed on IR because of the bulging discs in his neck.

Jon Beason LB CAR – Beason was arrested yesterday and charged with Aggravated Assault stemming from an incident on November 16th. He is charged with striking a guy outside a strip club.

Pisa Tinoisamoa LB CHI – Tinoisamoa has been placed on IR.

Psychocat's Crystal Litterbox Week 12

Last week proved to be a stellar one for the Litterbox as we went 3-0 to run the season record to 21-13. This week, we’ll look at matchups involving the two undefeated teams and a must-win game for two teams in the AFC North.

Colts (10-0) at Texans (5-5): The Colts are still undefeated, but this could well be a “trap game” for them. Their offense has been subpar for them in three of the last four games, and they only managed to beat the Texans 20-17 in their previous meeting.

Colts’ keys: It sounds odd to say this, but they need more production from their passing game. QB Peyton Manning (3,171-21-9) did have a fantastic game against the Patriots, when he threw for 4 TDs, including the game winner with 13 seconds left in the game. But he also was picked twice in that game, and over the last 4 games (including the win over the Patriots), he’s thrown 6 TDs and 5 picks.

The passing game is especially important for the Colts, because they don’t really have much of a ground game. RB Joseph Addai does have 7 rushing TDs, but only 514 rushing yards, and is averaging 3.5 ypc. Addai does have a little value as a receiver; he also has 3 TDs, and has even thrown 1 TD pass.

Fortunately for Manning, he has WR Reggie Wayne (76-968-8), who leads the NFL in receiving yardage and is tied for 2nd in TD catches with 3 others, one behind league leader Larry Fitzgerald. TE Dallas Clark (66-771-4) is the best in the game right now, but has been pretty much held in check the last two games, with just 5 catches for 68 yds and 1 TD in that span. WRs Pierre Garcon (32-511-3) and Austin Collie (39-413-4) give Manning two more good targets.

In recent weeks, the Colts defense has actually been more impressive than their offense. They are #1 for fewest points allowed, with 15.7 ppg. They don’t really excel in either pass or rushing defense, but they do have 24 sacks, and they may bend but they don’t break.

Twitter Fantasy Football Roundtable's Sleepers & Busts Week 12

Every week we at the Fantasy Football Roundtable try to bring you the best Sleepers and Busts for the upcoming week and this week is no different. We have taken a look at this week’s games and have come up with this comprehensive list of the players that you should or shouldn’t be targeting this week. Personally my sleeper of the week is stuffing and my bust is creamed cauliflower.

We do hope everyone had a Great Thanksgiving and most of us (not me) wanted to include that one of the things we are most grateful for during this season of thankfulness is that we (again not me) are glad that we (again not me) are NOT Giants fans.

Now on to week 12’s Sleepers & Busts…

Sleeper #1: Josh Freeman TBB – Freeman has 5 TDs in his 3 starts, but is coming off a 3-pick game against a tough and opportunistic Saints defense. This week he faces a Falcons secondary that is currently ranked 29th versus opposing QBs and has allowed 6 passing touchdowns in the last 3 weeks. Freeman has a full complement of receivers with Antonio Bryant back from injury and there was even a Michael Clayton sighting last week as he scored a touchdown. We should see Freeman working a lot out of the shotgun in this game, as he has had the most success while working from it. In fact all 5 of his touchdown passes have come out of the shotgun and it is something he thrived on at Kansas State. It is the tale of two Quarterbacks. When under center he is only completing 28% of his passes and has a QB rating of 18.9. When using the shotgun, he is completing 60% of his passes and has a QB rating of 105. Look for Freeman to come away with about 250 and 2 TDs is not out of the question.

Dark Horses & Non-Starters Week 12

Dark Horse or Non-Starter?
It's yet another short week for owners, but a critical one heading into the fantasy playoffs in December. There are three interesting match-ups on Turkey Day that owners will need to sort out quickly, especially with several teams sporting key injuries. I think the Broncos-Giants game will be an interesting one, as you will see with my picks this week.

Happy Thanksgiving... and good luck!

Quarterbacks

Dark Horses

Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks – I keep picking him, hoping he'll eventually come through for me. If he doesn't have a big game this week, I'm writing him off for good. The St. Louis Rams are playing better of late, but they still give up lots of fantasy points, especially to quarterbacks. They allow the (fourth) most fantasy points to the position, and the Hawks should control this game with the number of injuries mounting on the Rams sidelines (Marc Bulger out 3-6 weeks). I like him to produce in the neighborhood of his 279-yard, three-touchdown, and two-interception effort in Week 2.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills –– I nearly had him as one of my Dark Horses in Week 11, but ended up shying away. I was certain he was in for a good day, but I did not think it was worth getting excited about 230 yards and a score. Instead he had a solid 297 yards, one touchdowns, and two interceptions. This tells me you can seriously consider him if he's got a good match-up, and the Miami Dolphins are just that. Miami gives up the (fifth) most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, and both teams will be playing hard in this division rivalry. I like Fitzpatrick to continue to build a case for the Bills to keep him around in 2010.

Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons –– The Sophomore slump has been tough on owners, but there's hope he continues his turnaround  this week after a solid game against the Giants last week. He gets a cherry of a match-up against a very vulnerable Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, which allows the 11th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.  He should post solid numbers at home.
